Preparing female students for the University Entrance Exam

According to UNICEF, the education system in Afghanistan has been devastated by more than three decades of sustained conflict. For many children, completing primary school remains a distant dream – especially for girls – despite recent progress in raising enrolment. An estimated 3.7 million children do not attend school in Afghanistan – 60% of which are girls.

The underlining reasons for the low enrolment of girls are insecurity and traditional norms and practices related to the role of girls and women in society. Other factors can be explained in part by a lack of female teachers. Poverty and displacement are other contributing elements that drive many girls out of school. HRW report suggests that international donor efforts to educate girls have significantly faltered in recent years. Asia Foundation argues that providing girls and young women with opportunities to pursue an education is one of the most effective ways to promote gender equality and eradicate poverty in Afghanistan.

The University Prep Course program in Afghanistan aims to improve educational opportunities for girls, better preparing them for higher education and future employment. Only one in five Afghan women is literate. Education is one of the fundamental factors in leveling the playing field.

Each year we help fifty talented female students in diverse regions of Afghanistan to realize their dream majors by providing them scholarships for Kankor prep courses.
